PNG Ports Corporation Limited (PNGPCL) is purchasing three more pilot boats at a cost of K2.9 million to add to its fleet in order to cater for more ship calls in the near future.

PNGPCL is expecting ship calls to increase at its Lae and Port Moresby ports in 2012 and beyond with the delivery of the mobile harbour cranes (MHC) and rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes therefore the Corporation has signed an agreement to purchase more pilot boats.

Chief Executive Officer of PNGPCL, Mr. Brian Riches signed a ‘Pilot Boat Construction & Purchase Agreement’ to the tune of K2,933,763.02 with Hammerhead Plate Aluminium Boats Limited (HPABL) of Fiji recently to acquire specifically designed and constructed pilot boats.

Mr. Riches said that, with the deployment of the MHCs and the RTGs in Port Moresby and Lae, PNGPCL is expecting ship turnaround time and productivity at the ports to increase resulting in an increase in ship calls.
“In preparation for the increase in ship calls we need more pilot boats at our ports to cater for the increase.”
