PNG Ports Corporation Limited’s (PNGPCL) newly recruited crane operators for its Port Moresby and Lae port commenced on site training last week in Lae for operators to be familiar with handling and operations of the mobile harbour cranes (MHCs).

Training will be provided with the assistance of the MHC supplier – Gottwald Port Technology who have personnel currently in Lae.

PNGPCL’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer - Policy and Administration, Mr. Kamit Nanadai said recruitment of staff for both the MHCs and rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes are on track and will be finalised in phases prior to the delivery of all MHCs and RTGs to their respective ports of Lae and Port Moresby.

“We are recruiting the best qualified Papua New Guinean crane operators and will provide them the necessary training and skills to be able to operate and or provide technical assistance to the crane operators,” Mr. Nanadai said.

He said it is a requirement of PNG Ports that these crane operators are inducted into the port terminal operations and also provided with safety, security and general port operations training.

“The crane operators will also be taken through the PNGPCL portworker development program (PDP) training in phases to help them understand the operations within the ports,” Mr. Nanadai said.

Chief Operating Officer of PNGPCL, Mr. Michael Nye said this induction and training is necessary for the safety of the cranes and its Operators.

Mr. Nye said quality training is also needed as PNG Ports continues its transformation into a internationally standard port operator and service provider.

Recruitment and training of further personnel for the operations of the MHCs and RTGs is ongoing.
