PNGPCL again sponsors grade 12 students to undergo Maritime studies
PNG Ports Corporation Limited (PNGPCL) again will be sponsoring grade 12 students under its Cadetship Program for undergo training at PNG Maritime Training College in Madang next year.

The Corporation carried out awareness on the Cadetship program to secondary schools within the Maritime Provinces where PNGPCL provides Pilotage Services-Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Morobe, West New Britain, East New Britain and Madang and will increase the number of intakes from four to eight candidates this year under the program.

In 2010 and 2011 respectively, PNG Ports for the sponsored four grade 12 students particularly from Cameron and Bugandi Secondary Schools. Four of the eight are currently undergoing sea-time experience with Steamship Shipping Limited.

The cadet program is an ongoing initiative of PNG Ports to promote and encourage young and aspiring talent to join the Maritime Industry. The Company is especially keen to encourage females to work in the industry. The cadetship is a new development PNGPCL has taken on board with its aim of building human resource capacity to keep pace with the on-going social, economic and technological changes affecting the maritime industry.

This year, PNGPCL’s Human Resources personnel had extended its awareness program and also aptitude testing and preliminary interviews at Kokopo, Tusbab, Badihagwa, Kilakila Secondary Schools including Cameron and Bugandi Secondary.

PNGPCL Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Brian Riches said this initiative undertaken by the Corporation is to ensure that young people are better qualified with skills in the Maritime Industry.

“There is a lot to learn in the Maritime Industry, therefore, the sponsorship of students to undertake Maritime studies is of paramount to PNGPCL. I want to encourage every young and aspiring individual to take such opportunities and make the most of it,” he said.
